Assumptions
- The math: gallons per week = miles per week ÷ MPG. Weekly cost = gallons × price per gallon. Yearly cost = weekly cost × 52.
- Steady driving: it assumes you drive the same distance every week, at the same MPG, all year.
- One price all year: real prices change every week. The yearly figure is what a year would cost if today's price held, not a forecast.
- Default price: $4.284 is the EIA weekly U.S. average retail price for regular gasoline, week of Oct 19, 2026. Prices in your area and at your station will differ.
- Year-ago price: $3.019 is the same EIA series a year earlier. EIA reported the current price $1.265 higher than a year ago, and we subtracted.
- Example inputs: 250 miles a week and 25 MPG are placeholders, not averages. Use your own numbers.
- Not included: taxes beyond what's in the pump price, maintenance, tolls, or anything other than fuel.
